BY EDDY NYADWA: Protests can be a powerful way to voice concerns and demand change by citizens. Despite this, they also present security and safety risks. If you’re participating in or near a protest zone, there are some key tips to adhere to for safety.

1. BE INFORMED. Before joining a protest, skim through news sources for information about it. Go through reliable online news sources and social media. Get the location and information of the organizers, including any potential risks. During the Gen Z protests, various social media platforms provided real-time updates on protests. Some protesters were also , including the areas to avoid due to police confrontation

2. DRESS APPROPRIATELY. Wear comfortable, non-flammable clothing and sturdy shoes. Bright colors or identifiable clothing might make you more identifiable. It is advisable you opt for something neutral if you want to blend in. However, you may wear bright colors if it is part of the protesters’ dress code.

3. CARRY ESSENTIALS. Bring only what you need. you can carry, Mobile Phone, National Identification Card, some cash and water. A small first-aid kit can be invaluable if minor injuries occur. In past protests, participants who were prepared with water and masks reported feeling more secure and able to manage unexpected situations better.

4. AVOID RED ZONES. Keep away from confrontations and avoid areas where tensions are high. Stay informed about zones of potential conflict and steers clear of them. During the Gen Z protests, areas around government buildings were more likely to experience unrest, so many protesters avoided these zones to reduce risk.
